Scientists identify mysterious ‘golden orb’ found in Gulf of Alaska in 2023
The ‘golden orb’ retrieved from the Gulf of Alaska seafloor during a 2023 Seascape Alaska research cruise was identified as a lump of dead cells left by a sea anemone. Scientists found it in deep water west of Prince of Wales Island and it is now part of the Smithsonian’s collection, alongside other biological samples from NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer expeditions.
